Sound Bathing Sessions Now Available! Here's What to Expect
What if the best thing you did for your stress this year required absolutely no effort?
No technique to learn. No pose to hold. No app to download. You just lie down, close your eyes, and let the sound do the rest. That's sound bathing, and it's now available at New Park Centre in Chichester, every 3rd Thursday of the month.
If you've never heard of it, or you're curious but not quite sure what to expect, this post covers everything you need to know.
What is Sound Bathing?
Sound bathing, also called sound healing, is a form of deep rest where you're immersed in live sound produced by instruments played around you. There's no water involved despite the name. The "bath" refers to the way sound waves wash over and surround your body, holding you in a deeply relaxed state, much like the feeling of being immersed in warm water.
You lie down on a mat, covered with a blanket, and simply listen. That's it. No effort, no experience, and no meditation background required.
Sound Bathing and Sound Healing, Is There a Difference?
These two terms are often used interchangeably, and at Mel's Healing Sanctuary, they essentially mean the same thing. Sound healing is the broader practice, using sound and vibration to support your physical, emotional, and energetic wellbeing. Sound bathing is the most common format: a guided session where you lie down and are immersed in live sound.
If you've seen either term and wondered whether they're different things, they're not. Both lead to the same mat, the same instruments, and the same deeply restorative experience.
What Actually Happens in a Session?
Sessions at Mel's Healing Sanctuary last between 30 and 90 minutes and are available as group sessions or 1-1.
I run a group session every 3rd Thursday at the New Park Centre, Chichester at 12:30pm till 1:15pm.
Here's how a typical session unfolds:
Settling in: You lie down on a comfortable mat, supported with blankets and cushions. Your only job is to get comfortable.
The sound journey begins: Mel plays a range of instruments around you, crystal singing bowls, gongs, drums, cymbals, rain sticks, and ocean drums, among others. Each instrument works on different tones and frequencies, resonating with different parts of the body.
Deep rest: Most people drift into a state somewhere between waking and sleep. The mind quiets naturally because there's nothing to follow or analyse, no melody, no rhythm, just sound washing over you.
Gentle return: Sessions close with a few moments of silence, giving you time to surface slowly and feel grounded before you leave.
What Does It Feel Like?
People describe the experience differently, but some of the most common responses include:
Deep relaxation, drifting in and out of a sleep-like state
A meditative or dreamlike quality, even for people who've never meditated
A noticeable reduction in mental chatter and physical tension
Heightened awareness of thoughts and emotions as they pass through
A sense of calm that often lasts well beyond the session itself
The sound and vibration can influence your nervous system through resonance, gently encouraging a shift from a stressed, activated state into something much calmer. For people who find traditional meditation difficult or frustrating, sound bathing is often a revelation. There's nothing to do. The sound guides you there.
— Mel's Healing SanctuaryAt Mel's, no two sessions are quite the same. The instruments are chosen and played intuitively, responding to the energy in the room. Whether you're in a group or a 1-1 session, the experience is always personal, and the sound meets you exactly where you are. This is why so many people who come sceptical leave converted. It's not about belief. It's about giving your nervous system the conditions it needs to reset.
